Great News from Weeki Wachee River!

Our team recently joined Sea & Shoreline for the latest maintenance check on our eelgrass restoration project on the Weeki Wachee River, and we’re thrilled to report that the grasses are thriving!

Each month, the team heads out to carefully clean the GrowSAV™ cages, removing algae and sediment that can block sunlight and slow growth. This regular care ensures that the young aquatic vegetation has the best possible chance to establish itself and flourish. And it’s paying off: the site looks incredible, with lush blades of grass growing out and over the cages, which protect the plants while they’re taking roots from herbivores like turtles and manatees.

Even more inspiring has been the response from the Weeki Wachee community. Local residents have shown incredible enthusiasm for the project. Some have even requested informational signs to display in their yards, proudly supporting the restoration of their beloved river.

This collaboration between science, stewardship, and community is what makes conservation truly work. Together, we’re not only restoring eelgrass, we’re restoring balance and connection in one of Florida’s most beautiful waterways.
