In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene’s devastating impact on Florida, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has once again stepped up by assisting in rescue and recovery efforts across the state. In coordination with the State Emergency Operations Center and partner agencies, FWC teams deployed their swamp buggies, airboats, shallow draft vessels, UTVs, and four-wheel drive patrol trucks. As with previous hurricanes, our Foundation is prepared to support FWC’s efforts.
Our Foundation has a long history of partnering with FWC during times of crisis. When Hurricane Ian tore through Florida, we provided vital funding to aid in the swift deployment of FWC teams. Thanks to grassroot donors, we were proud to support nearly 100 FWC officers, biologists, and other staff, aiding in relocation assistance, loss of personal property, and home repair.
Now, in the wake of Hurricane Helene, our Foundation is once again committed to supporting FWC. We’ve activated our FWC Employee Assistance Fund, ensuring that FWC has the resources they need to continue their rescue and recovery missions. As you assess damage within your community, please do so safely:
- Turn Around, Don’t Drown – Even shallow floodwaters can be dangerous and hide hazards like debris, downed power lines, or sinkholes. Turn around and find an alternate route if you encounter flooded roads.
- Stay Clear of Downed Power Lines – Downed lines could still be live and pose a serious risk of electrocution. Report them immediately to local authorities and maintain a safe distance.
- Check for Wildlife – Displaced wildlife, such as snakes or alligators, may seek shelter in unexpected areas after a storm. Be cautious around debris, flooded areas, and structures where animals might be hiding.
With the storm behind us, recovery is just beginning. As we’ve done in the past, we’ll continue to stand alongside FWC in their work to ensure that all are safe and Florida’s unique ecosystems and wildlife are protected.
