Dear Dani,

Every summer I check my hurricane supplies and update my emergency plans: batteries, bottled water, evacuation routes, the usual. It got me wondering if I should also be thinking about updating my will or doing any estate planning this time of year.

— Storm-Ready Steward, Port St. Joe, FL

Dear Storm-Ready,

What a thoughtful and very Florida question. While most people think about canned goods and backup generators when hurricane season rolls around, you are absolutely right to consider your bigger preparedness picture too.

Updating your estate plans, like your will or beneficiary designations, might not be on the traditional hurricane checklist, but it absolutely belongs on the life checklist. Just like we don’t wait for a storm to hit before we buy batteries, we shouldn’t wait for a crisis to make sure our wishes are clearly documented.

Estate planning is about peace of mind. It ensures your loved ones are protected and that the causes you care about, like Florida’s fish and wildlife, are remembered. If your life has changed in the past year—new family members, a move, retirement, or just a fresh perspective—it’s a smart time to revisit your plans.

So yes, while you are checking flashlights and stocking up on peanut butter, take a moment to check in on your legacy too. A little planning now can bring a lot of calm later.

Warmly,

Dani
