Bob Graham, born on November 9, 1936, is a native Floridian whose leadership left an enduring mark on the state’s conservation landscape. Growing up in Miami Lakes, Graham spent much of his childhood outdoors, nurturing a love for wild Florida that would shape his career. Serving as Florida’s governor from 1979 to 1987 and later as a U.S. Senator from 1987 to 2005, Graham was a dedicated public servant whose deep connection to Florida’s natural environment informed his policy priorities.
During his time as governor, he championed initiatives like Save Our Rivers, which provided critical funding to protect Florida’s wetlands and waterways. The program allows water management districts to acquire and protect environmentally sensitive land.
His commitment also extended to preserving the Everglades. As a senator, he co-sponsored the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan, a landmark piece of legislation aimed at reviving the natural water flow and health of the Everglades.
