Grants at Work: Opening the Outdoors with Healing Hometown Heroes

Florida’s future depends on who gets invited into its wild spaces. One program is opening the door wider than ever.

Thanks to funding from our Wildlife Foundation of Florida license plate, we awarded $14,000 to Healing Hometown Heroes (H3) to support a hands-on program that blends real conservation education with meaningful access to Florida’s outdoor traditions.

Through alligator management workshops, aquatic stewardship lessons, and youth hunts with FWC, participants learn how conservation works in practice and why protecting wild Florida is so important. A key part of this project is making Florida’s outdoor community more reflective of the people who call it home, namely intentionally engaging women, minorities, veterans, youth, and individuals with disabilities. The program utilizes outdoor-based therapy and peer support through mental health clinicians. H3 also employs program directors, like Felicia Commander, who empower minorities to get outside.

A Native American outdoorswoman from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Felicia leads hunts with years of know-how and understanding. Known for her nurturing “mama bear” spirit, she is driven by her passion for empowering women to embrace outdoor activities. By opening the door for people who have not always had access to these experiences, H3 is helping ensure that our state’s outdoor heritage is available to as many Floridians as possible.

By purchasing a “deer” plate, you directly contribute to programs like these. Together we can ensure a healthy future for the state’s wildlife and access to wild Florida by all.
