Grants at Work: Restoring Mangroves and Seagrass in Jupiter Narrows

Florida’s coastal ecosystems depend on a delicate balance. Mangroves stabilize shorelines, protect communities from storms, and provide critical habitat for fish and wildlife. Seagrass beds support entire food webs, improving water quality and sustaining fisheries. But in places like Jupiter Narrows, that balance is being disrupted.

Thanks to funding from our Foundation’s Discover Florida’s Oceans specialty license plate, the Jupiter Narrows Conservation Alliance is taking action to restore these essential habitats. This $16,250 grant supports efforts to protect and enhance mangrove islands and surrounding seagrass beds in a heavily impacted portion of the Indian River Lagoon.

Over time, wave energy from storms and increased boating activity has caused significant erosion in the Narrows. Mangrove islands that once provided shelter and habitat are shrinking and as they disappear, so do the benefits they provide to wildlife and water quality. Community leaders and scientists alike have raised concerns that without intervention, these habitats could be lost entirely.

This project focuses on restoring three key mangrove islands and improving surrounding seagrass habitat. Plans include stabilizing shorelines using natural materials, planting native mangroves, and enhancing seagrass areas to support marine life. Carefully placed limestone breakwaters will help reduce wave energy, allowing sediments to settle and vegetation to reestablish.

The need for this work is clear. Historical images show that mangrove coverage has declined significantly over the past several decades, leaving once-protected shorelines more exposed to erosion and disturbance. Today, many of the remaining mangrove islands show signs of stress, with exposed roots, thinning vegetation, and reduced stability.

Restoration efforts are not just about rebuilding habitat, they are about protecting entire ecosystems. Healthy mangroves and seagrass beds improve water clarity, support fish populations, and provide nursery habitat for species that sustain Florida’s recreational and commercial fisheries. They also act as natural buffers, reducing the impacts of storms and helping coastal communities remain resilient.

This project is part of a much larger vision. With a total estimated cost of more than $900,000, this funding helps advance critical planning, design, and early restoration efforts that will pave the way for full-scale implementation. It also brings together a strong coalition of partners, including local governments, state agencies, and community organizations, all working toward a shared goal of restoring the Jupiter Narrows.

By investing in nature-based solutions, we are helping rebuild habitat, protect shorelines, and ensure that Florida’s coastal ecosystems continue to thrive.
