The View from 105 Years of Finding Joy in Nature

At 105 years old, Rita’s mother Dolores is full of curiosity, connection, and a deep appreciation for the natural world. It’s what inspired Rita’s support of our Foundation.

Dolores lives at home on a beautiful property along Hampton Lake, where she remains active and engaged in her daily routine. With the help of a walker and the support of her family, she enjoys a rich life. She reads books from the local library, checks email and Facebook, and plays Words with Friends on her computer. Evenings are reserved for longtime favorites like Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, reflecting her sharp mind and enduring independence.

Much of her joy comes from the view just outside her windows.

Throughout the day, she watches Florida’s wildlife pass by. Deer and wild turkeys wander across the property, while birds gather at the feeders in a steady stream of color. In recent months, a pair of vocal sandhill cranes has made frequent visits. They stroll close to the house, drink from the birdbath, and bring a sense of wonder right to her doorstep. As the day winds down, she takes in the beauty of lake sunsets.

For decades, she has never missed sending birthday cards to her children and grandchildren. It is a tradition she continues even today. That simple act of love has left a lasting impression on her family, including Rita.

Inspired by that tradition, Rita found a meaningful way to honor her mother. As a longtime supporter of the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida, she chose to send her mom a Mother’s Day postcard in support of our Foundation’s Conserving Florida’s Wildlife Fund.

“When I saw that option, I thought it was such a meaningful way to give,” Rita shared. “It allowed me to celebrate my mom while also supporting something I care about.”

For Rita, giving back to conservation is both personal and purposeful.

“It makes me feel great,” she said. “I don’t feel enough is being done to protect our wildlife. Donating to a cause that goes directly to wildlife conservation is one way to help.”

Through Rita’s thoughtful gift, her mother’s legacy continues while also helping protect Florida’s wildlife and wild places for generations to come.
