Nathaniel Reed’s Lasting Legacy

Born in July of 1933, Nathaniel Pryor Reed spent much of his life dedicated to conserving wild Florida. Raised in Jupiter Island, Reed’s love for the natural world began in the lush, vibrant landscapes of his childhood home. He later attended Trinity College in Connecticut but returned to Florida, where he devoted his career to environmental advocacy. Serving as the Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Fish, Wildlife, and National Parks under Presidents Nixon and Ford, Reed played a crucial role in numerous conservation efforts across the nation, always with a particular focus on his beloved home state.

Impact on Florida Conservation

Nathaniel Reed’s impact on Florida’s marine environments is profound and enduring. One of his most notable achievements was co-founding the Everglades Foundation, where he tirelessly advocated for the restoration of this critical ecosystem. Reed’s efforts were instrumental in securing federal and state funding for the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan, aiming to protect and restore over 18,000 square miles of the Everglades and the surrounding estuaries. His advocacy also extended to the Indian River Lagoon, one of the most biodiverse estuaries in North America, where he worked to reduce pollution and promote seagrass restoration.

At the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida, we are honored to continue Nathaniel Reed’s legacy through our restoration work in the Indian River Lagoon. We have helped plant thousands of plants in the Lagoon’s tributaries where the water quality supports it, providing crucial habitat for marine life like manatees. Our commitment to restoring Florida’s waterways reflects Reed’s vision, ensuring that these vital ecosystems thrive for generations to come.
