Restoring the Weeki Wachee River One Blade at a Time

In the heart of Florida’s spring country, the Weeki Wachee River winds through crystal-clear waters, lush vegetation, and a history steeped in natural wonder. But even this iconic spring-fed river is feeling the strain of human impact: erosion, pollution, and habitat loss have threatened its health. That’s why our Foundation is proud to announce the launch of our latest seagrass restoration effort on the Weeki Wachee.

We’re teaming up with contractor Sea & Shoreline to replant native aquatic vegetation along the riverbed, using a clever tool called the GrowSAV™ cage. These protective devices shield young plants from grazing and uprooting while they establish themselves, ensuring that new underwater meadows can take hold and thrive.

Submerged aquatic vegetation are the unsung heroes of Florida’s waterways. They stabilize sediments, improve water quality, absorb excess nutrients, and provide food and shelter to countless aquatic species, from fish and snails to manatees and turtles. In fact, just two and a half acres of seagrass can support up to 100,000 fish and 100 million invertebrates.

But it’s not just about biodiversity. These underwater plants also help filter pollutants, keep our springs clear, and sequester carbon.

The Weeki Wachee project, totaling $480,000 made possible from a legislative appropriation, is just one of many restoration efforts our Foundation is funding across Florida. From the Indian River Lagoon to the Loxahatchee River, we’re partnering with local communities, scientists, and conservation contractors to identify areas where vegetation can recover and then helping it get there.

As we celebrate projects like Weeki Wachee, we invite you to be part of the solution. Donations to our Marine Mammal Fund support efforts like these, ensuring that manatees and other species have healthy habitats to call home.

Together, we’re not just restoring rivers, we’re restoring balance. One blade at a time.
