Ribbon-Cutting for Lake City Fishing Pier

On a crisp Friday morning in January, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), local leaders, and community partners gathered to celebrate a project that embodies the spirit of Florida’s outdoor heritage: the grand opening of the Harter Pier at Lake Montgomery Fish Management Area. This newly completed, wheelchair-accessible fishing pier stands as a beacon of inclusivity and a tribute to a local hero.

Dedicated in memory of Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Al Harter, a World War II veteran who devoted his life to service, the Harter Pier offers residents and visitors a prime location to fish, relax, and connect with nature. Alongside our Foundation, key partners included FWC, the Harter Family Trust, the City of Lake City, Columbia County, North Florida Professional Services, and the Columbia County Tourist Development Council. Together, we share a common goal: conserving Florida’s outdoor spaces and ensuring they remain accessible to everyone.

Our Foundation was proud to contribute $205,000, in partnership with Aloysius Harter Family Trust, Columbia County Tourist Development Council, and the City of Lake City,.to the completion of the Harter Pier as part of our mission to safeguard Florida’s natural beauty and uphold its outdoor traditions. Providing greater access to outdoor recreation, especially through inclusive amenities like this pier, is vital to fostering a love for nature and encouraging responsible stewardship of Florida’s ecosystems.
