Black Voices of Wild Florida Honoring Officer Robert Lee Tanner

Our Foundation works to protect wild Florida and values the diverse experiences people bring to outdoor spaces. During Black History Month, we are highlighting Black voices who experience, document, and share Florida’s outdoors in meaningful ways. From behind the camera to out on the water with family, these stories reflect the many ways Black Floridians connect with nature and why representation in outdoor spaces matters.

Officer Robert Tanner served as a Wildlife Officer with the Florida Game & Freshwater Fish Commission, one of the predecessor agencies that later formed the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. He was hired on September 7, 1982, and retired on February 28, 2005, dedicating more than 22 years to conservation law enforcement in Florida.

Following his passing in January 2026, Officer Tanner’s family requested that memorial donations be directed to our Foundation, reflecting the deep pride they held in his career and commitment to conservation.

His daughter shared that Officer Tanner was among the first African-American wildlife officers within the agency’s history. Wildlife officers play a critical role in protecting Florida’s natural resources, supporting responsible outdoor recreation, and serving the public across the state’s lands and waters. Officer Tanner particularly loved educating children and the public about the importance of wildlife conservation.

During Black History Month, we remember Officer Robert Lee Tanner not only for the more than two decades he dedicated to protecting wild Florida, but for what his career represents. His story is a reminder that conservation and stewardship have always been shaped by individuals from diverse backgrounds whose commitment made lasting impacts on the places we cherish today.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Tanner family and our gratitude for allowing us to honor Officer Tanner’s life and legacy.
