For Taylor Owens, giving to Florida’s wildlife didn’t start with a big, dramatic moment. It started with a tiny one.
While walking through a storage closet at work, Taylor accidentally stepped on a small lizard, one of the little native lizards Floridians see darting across patios and sidewalks every day. It was an honest accident, but it stuck with her.
“I felt so badly for the poor lizard all day,” Taylor shared. “Even though it was an accident, I thought a donation would be a nice thing to do in his honor. He wasn’t bothering anybody.”
That simple act of compassion led Taylor to make a gift to our Foundation..
Taylor has lived in Florida for 10 years and, like many residents, feels a deep connection to the wildlife that makes the state special.
“It’s what makes Florida great,” she said. “I’ve seen firsthand lots of wildlife areas get built over, and it makes me sad for the environment and the animals that call Florida home.”
Her favorite Florida animal? Manatees, especially during manatee season, when spotting them in the water feels like a uniquely Florida kind of magic. When she wants to experience wild Florida, she heads to local parks and trails.
From manatees and panthers to bats, birds, and even the smallest lizards, Taylor’s story is a reminder that conservation isn’t one-size-fits-all. People are drawn to nature in different ways for different reasons, and all of them matter.
Some donors give because they love paddling Florida’s springs.
Some want to help kids get outside and discover nature for the first time.
Some are passionate about iconic species like manatees and panthers.
And some, like Taylor, give simply because they care even about the smallest creatures.
That’s why we created Pick a Cause: a way for supporters to direct their giving toward the wild places and wildlife they love most. Whether your heart belongs to outdoor recreation, imperiled species, habitat conservation, or environmental education, there’s a fund that lets your donation reflect you.
Because whatever your reason for giving, there’s a cause here for you. Explore our Pick a Cause funds and find the conservation work that speaks to you.
