FWC biologists recently made history by capturing and collaring the heaviest Florida panther ever recorded: a massive 166-pound adult male! This record-breaking big cat is now providing scientists with invaluable insights into the health, movement, and behavior of this endangered species.
But moments like these don’t happen without support. Our Florida Panther Fund, with a generous gift from the Knopf Family Foundation, directly funds this vital research by supplying FWC with essential equipment, including ATVs and GPS collars. These tools enable biologists to track panther movements, assess their health, and gather critical data to guide conservation strategies.
The Florida panther’s future is at risk due to habitat loss and fragmentation, forcing them to cross dangerous roadways in search of territory. In 2024, more than 30 panthers were killed by vehicles. That’s why we’ve also invested in solutions like the Florida Panther Payment for Ecosystem Services Pilot Program. By working with landowners, the program helps secure and maintain crucial panther habitat north of the Caloosahatchee River, ensuring these big cats have the space they need to roam safely. Our Foundation played a key role in securing $1.5 million in federal funding for the program, along with an additional $400,000, but there’s still more work to be done.
We need your help to expand these conservation efforts. Donate to our Florida Panther Fund today and be a part of the movement to protect Florida’s iconic wild cat. Every dollar makes a difference in ensuring their survival.
