Born in 1865, Abraham Lincoln Lewis was a pioneering entrepreneur and philanthropist who left an indelible mark on Florida’s history. As Florida’s first Black millionaire, Lewis used his wealth and influence to create opportunities for Black Americans in the early 20th century. He founded the Afro-American Life Insurance Company in Jacksonville, which became a cornerstone of financial stability and growth for the Black community.
However, one of his most enduring legacies is American Beach, a resort in Amelia Island he established in 1935. This beachfront community was not only a safe haven during an era of segregation but also a place where Black families could enjoy and connect with Florida’s natural beauty. His foresight in land conservation ensured that American Beach remained a pristine and vital habitat for local wildlife, including sea turtles and coastal birds.
We seek to continue Abraham Lincoln Lewis’s legacy through our commitment to promoting diversity in conservation and outdoor recreation. By supporting nonprofits like Cloud Nine Outdoors, Inc. and EcoRovers, we aim to ensure that wild Florida is accessible and enjoyable for all.
Abraham Lincoln Lewis’s life and work demonstrate the profound impact one individual can have on conservation. Join us in continuing his legacy by including the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida in your estate planning.
