Jimmy Buffett’s Lasting Legacy

Jimmy Buffett is known for providing America with a soundtrack to its island dreams, but he’s given the world much more. Born on Christmas Day in 1946 and raised on Florida’s Gulf Coast, Buffett’s life and music were profoundly influenced by the waters and coastal habitats of his childhood. His laid-back vibe and hits like Margaritaville earned him a devoted following known as Parrotheads, but Buffett was also a tireless advocate for wild Florida.

Buffett’s commitment to Florida’s environment was as enduring as his music. In 1981, he co-founded the Save the Manatee Club with former Florida Governor Bob Graham to protect our beloved marine mammal from boat strikes, pollution, and habitat destruction. His work with the club raised awareness and drove legislation resulting in the protection of the iconic species.

He was also a staunch supporter of the Everglades Restoration Project, championing one of the nation’s most ambitious ecological preservation efforts to safeguard the “river of grass” for generations to come.

Through his life and career, he reminded us all to slow down, enjoy the view, and take care of the places that inspire us. Our Foundation is proud to continue Buffett’s legacy. In particular, we share his love of Florida’s gentle giants, using our Marine Mammal Fund to feed starving manatees and restore the seagrass beds they depend on.

On his birthday, let’s celebrate Jimmy Buffett’s lasting legacy by making a difference for wild Florida. By including us in your estate planning through FreeWill, your gift will ensure that Florida’s wildlife and wild places continue to inspire generations to come. Learn more at FreeWill.
