Saving Space for Florida’s Burrowing Owls

The Florida burrowing owl may be small in stature, but it has a big place in the hearts of Floridians. With their expressive eyes, long legs, and charismatic personalities, these owls have become iconic, even inspiring the popular book Hoot by Carl Hiaasen.

But they face mounting pressures from habitat loss due to residential and commercial development. Unlike most owls, burrowing owls rely on the ground for nesting, shelter, and foraging. Ensuring they have access to open spaces, such as dry prairies, pastures, and urban vacant lots, is essential to survival for this state-threatened species.

Two years ago, our Foundation partnered with FWC to release a request for proposals to fund habitat protection projects for burrowing owls. We’re thrilled to share the positive outcome: Cape Coral City Council recently approved the purchase of five lots dedicated solely to preserving burrowing owl habitat.

This land acquisition marks the first agreement of its kind in the region. By turning dollars into tangible conservation outcomes, we’re not only protecting the homes of these beloved owls, we’re also preserving Florida’s natural heritage for future generations and proving that even the smallest species can inspire big conservation wins.

Bring a bit of burrowing owl love into your home while supporting Florida conservation by purchasing our burrowing owl plush.
